A development of “two path method” for solving phase instability of large microwave interfarometer system has been made.It is refered to a L. O. system by which dual-frequency phase-locked L. 0. signals with high stability are provided for the solar radio interferometer at 3 cm and 6 cm wavelengths and it is a part of the pilot project of the solar centimeter synthesis telescope. In this system, the 2610.0 MHz and 2632.5 MHz master signals are seperately injected from each end of the interferometer and propagate...

A development of “two path method” for solving phase instability of large microwave interfarometer system has been made.It is refered to a L. O. system by which dual-frequency phase-locked L. 0. signals with high stability are provided for the solar radio interferometer at 3 cm and 6 cm wavelengths and it is a part of the pilot project of the solar centimeter synthesis telescope. In this system, the 2610.0 MHz and 2632.5 MHz master signals are seperately injected from each end of the interferometer and propagate towards each other in the same reetangular waveguide, and then they are multiplied togather at each antenna site. The dimensions of the type BJ-32 waveguide are 34mm by 72mm, and the directional couplers by which the signals in the waveguide are extracted for each antenna have norminal coupling factor of -20 db and directivity of about -22 db. The resultant signal after multiplication is amplified by a microwave phase-locked loop to provide phase-stabilized dual signals at 5225.8 MHz and 10451.7 MHz for each antenna. The latter is the doubler frequency of the former.Since the transmission loss of the rectangular waveguide BJ-32 is very low, theoretically 0.025 db/m maximum, and the phase stability of a "two path method" system is independent of the transmission length, the L. O. system may cover a large distance without serious instability problem.Simulating experiments of this system have been made. The experimental apparatus consist of master oscillators, directional couplers, microwave multipliers, microwave loops, a phase comparator, waveguide sections and waveguide components etc. The major part of the waveguide system was installed in open air to test its suitability in varying weather conditions. The phase comparator used is a Magic-Tee phase bridge followed by a chart recorder. The recorded phase difference showed that the instability of the system is within a few degrees at λ=6 cm in a period of two or three days. This system may be used to provide L. O. signals, for a microwave interferometer or a synthesis telescope with a baseline as long as 104λ or even more. The experimental system used was developed by the Beijing Observatory and the Department of Electronics and Radio Engineering of Zhejiang University.
