An analysis of the karyotype of the Rana chensinensis was carried out on the basis of the chromosome complements of leucocytes of peripheral blood cultured in vitro.The diploid chromosome number is 24,i.e.,12 large (relative length>7.0) and 12 small (relative length<6.0) chromosomes.There is no visible evidence of sex chromosome dimorphism.All chromosomes were matched into 12 pairs.Of these chromosome pairs,nos.1,4,5,8 and 10 were metacentric,nos.2,3,7,11 and 12 were submetacentric,and nos.6 and 9 were subtelocentric.According to their relative lengths,centromere index and other characters,24 chromosomes were tentatively classified into 3 classes: Group 1,Group 2-6,and Group 7-12.The most distinctive chromosome is No.7,a submetacentric chromosome with a pronounced secondary constriction in the long arms.Chromosomes nos.1-5 carry a slight secondary constriction in its short arms,and chromosomes nos.6 and 9 carry a nondistinctive secondary constriction in its long arms.All these constrictions are located near their respective centromeres.The chromosomes of Rana chensinensis collected in Beijing is easy to identify by their relative lengths,centromere index and secondary constriction marker.Therefore,from the viewpoint of cytogenetics,these cells can be better used as the materials for cell engineering research.Through karyotype analysis of Rana temporaria distributed in Europe and Rana chensinensis distributed in Beijing,it is quite clear that the latter is not a subspecies of the former.The name of Rana temporaria chensinensis given to the latter by Pope and Boring (1940) is therefore not appropriate.It is suggested that its name should be changed to Rana chensinensis.
