>=Sputtered carbon hard coatings have been developed as solid lubricant coatings with excellent tribological properties,very low friction coefficient (<0.1) and very low wear rate (~10-17 m3/N m) at very high load bearing capacity (>3.4 GPa in pin-on-disc tests in air).The excellent tribological behaviour of sputtered carbon coalings is a combination of high hardness and low friction coefficient.This paper describes the closed field magnetron sputtering technique used to deposit carbon coatings with an amorphous graphite like structure combining high hardness with low friction.Coatings on M42 tool steel substrates have been tested using pin-on-disc test with a tungsten carbide ball of 5 mm diameter at a load of up to 140 N and a speed of 200 mm/s and have been shown to have a wear rate of ~10-17 m3/N m.The deposition technique is described and the variation of coating properties with deposition parameters is given.The coating has good adhesion,exceptional wear resistance and load bearing capacity and is a candidate for a wide range of applications.
