Aim of the study We investigated the effectiveness of short-term dietary supplementation of mothers with red palm oil as a strategy for improving the vitamin A status of the mother-infant dyad.
      
Methods Lactating mothers in Colonia Los Pinos, a barrio of Tegucigalpa, Honduras, consumed a total of 90-mg β-carotene as red palm oil (n = 32) supplements (n = 36) or placebo (n = 18) in six equal doses over 10 days.
      
Results Maternal serum α-carotene and β-carotene concentrations were increased 2 fold by palm oil compared with 1.2 fold by β-carotene supplements.
      
Increases in breastmilk β-carotene were greater for the palm oil group (2.5 fold) than for the β-carotene supplement group (1.6 fold) and increases in milk α-carotene concentrations (3.2 fold) were slightly greater than those of β-carotene.

crossing(Duroc×Landrace×Yorkshire) piglets weaned at 28 days were selected for experiment on feed and digestion. They were divided into 7 groups so as to determine their digestibility of thermal energy fat, Oleic acid, lnferior-Oleic acid, flax Oleic acid Contained in Palmitic oil, soybean oil, and beef oil. The aim of this experiment lies in studying the effect of adding different oils to the early weaned piglets'ration nutribion and on the feeding efficiency. The result showed: the apparent digestibility of the thermal energy of beef oil only accounted for 74.07% of that of palnitic oil and 72.48% of that of soybean oil. When single oil was added the feeding and digestion experiments showed no considerable difference between adding palmitic oil and adding soybean oil, but their efficienly was much prior to that of adding beef oil. The daily gain of those piglets fed with ration Containing palmitic oil and soybean oil was 17.34% and 20.89% higher respectively than those fed with ration containing beef oil. Fed with compound oils the group fed with ration containing 2% palmitic oil + 2% soynbean oil showed the best efficiency.Their daily gain increased 21.97% higher than that of the group fed with ration containing palmitic oil and 18.38% higher than that of the soybean oil group.

The fatty acid compositions of the various lipid fractions in the liver,serum and abdominal fat were affected by the profile of the dietary oils.Levels of palmitic and oleic acid were decreased,while levels of PUFA were increased compared with birds supplemented with palm oil,in those supplemented with oils rich in n 6 or n 3PUFA.Levels of n 6 PUFAs,i.e.,linoleic(1 8∶ 2 n 6 ) and arachidonic acid(2 0∶ 4n 6 ) were decreased, while levels of n 3PUFAs were increased compared with birdssupplemented with saffloweroil, in those supplemented with oils rich in n- 3PUFA.The n 3PUFAs with very long chain from fish oil were more effective in incorporation into tissue lipids of poultry than those derived fromα linolenic acid of linseed oil.
