However, the highest lint yield appeared in the treatment with 3 fruiting branches removed. In a set of experiments with the removal of basal 3 fruiting branches conducted at 5 locations of Jiangsu Province in 1988, counted 42 days after treatment, the number of fruiting nodes of the treated plants was similar to that of the untreated; the square and young boll shedding was decreased by 5.28%; the boll number per plant was increased. The boll rot control effect of the treatment was higher than 57% (Table 4). In addition, the fiber quality and output value were increased (Table 3).

Resistance of the toxin tolerant pollen plants to Alternaria alternata was tested by in vitro leaf methedand 18%~42.9%of them showed higher resistance than control NC89 plants;Four of these plants were se-lected to be diploidized by 0.4%cochicine and then self-pollinated.The disease resistance of the progenies ofthe 4 plants was retested in the following two generations under mechanically inoculated and natural condi-tions repectively,and all of them showed consistant,stable and heritable resistance to Alternaria alternata,suggesting that the resistance genes were already homozygous. The resistance to Cucumber Mosaic Virus and Tobacco Mosaic Virus and the preservation of cultivar properties in transgenic tobacco lines of a major commercial cv NC89 were tested under field conditions. Three of the transgenic lines, ddsignated A. B and C,possessed the chimeric genes of cucumber mosaic virus (CMV)satellite (Sat) RNA and coat protein (CP) and one of them, ddsignated T, possessed the chimeric genes of“CMV CP+TMV CP”. The results indicated that the transgenic lines showed much higher resistance than the non-transformed plants, and the“CMV CP+Sat RNA”-mediated protection was more effective than the“CMV CP+TMV CP”. -mediated protection. The disease indexes of the transgenic line B, which showed the highest resistance, averaged less than 3 and 6 in contrast to about 14 and 83. 7 of the non-transformed NC89 under natural conditions and with inoculation of viruses respectively. The cultivar properties of the transgenic lines improved but showed no genetic variation compared with the non-transformed plants.

对转“黄瓜花叶病毒外壳蛋白(CMVCP)+卫星RNA”嵌合基因的工程NC89的A、B、C三个纯系以及转“CMVCP+烟草花叶病毒外壳蛋白(TMVCP)”嵌合基因的工程NC89T纯系进行了田间抗病性鉴定及农艺性状测试,结果表明:不论在人工接毒或自然发病条件下,转基因NC89的花叶病病情指数都明显低于未转基因NC89对照,其中B纯系的抗病性最高,在上述条件下,相对防效分别达到80.2%、92.95%。在农艺性状方面,转基因NC89较对照有所改善,但种性未变。
