Sheep and cattle graze generally 3-5 times during 24-ours period.Cattle grazes about 4-9 hours and sheep about 9-11 hours including searching and foraging. How long a animal forages is dependent on the weather, animal species or breed, the quality and quantity of useable herbage, and the difficulty that animal reach a plant, and so on. It is the best strategy of animals that they forage more in shorter time, because the prolongation of foraging means more energy consumption for the foraging. In general, animal forages longer when the forage quantity and quality are high than when those are low. When the avaliable herbage decreased and limited the mount of bite size, cattle and sheep have a tend to increase the grazing time and (or) biting rate to compensate the decrease of bite size, in order to maintain the stability of the forage intake, In temperate, when the pasture is overgrazing or the plant growth is low, sheep forage time increase from 8-9 hours to 12hours, the selective grazing of animals can also lead to longer foraging time and a deficiency of forage intake. The mount and quality of the foraged plants can significantly influence the time spent ruminating. The rumination time of cow shorter when the quality of foraged plants is high than when that is low.
