It is of prime importance to ascertain the rate of penetration of RNA hydrolyzate into the rice plant, especially from the practical point of view, since it would be obviously useless, if a heavy rain comes before the sprayed RNA hydrolyzate is absorbed.(1) For this purpose, the rate of penetration of RNA hydrolyzate into rice has been followed, using ~(14)C-labeled free bases, nucleosides and nucleotides (adenine, uridine, GMP, AMP and UMP). These ~(14)C-labeled constituents of RNA hydrolyzate can be introduced into rice plants through both leaves and roots. About 70 to 80 per cent of the ~(14)C-labeled nucleotides is absorbed by rice in six hours, so if it rains within 6 hours after spraying, the RNA hydrolyzate must be sprayed again.(2) Low molecular weight substances, RNA, DNA, proteins and polysaccharides are extracted from the rice plants and quantitatively separated. The results show that ~(14)C-labeled adenine and uridine are quickly converted to their corresponding nucleotides but only a small part of the ~(14)C-radioactivity is incorporated into the RNA fractions. This suggests that the RNA hydrolyzate in the form of nucleotides and their derivatives probably takes an active part in the metabolism of rice.

The theory of Price and Wilkins has been extended as follows:(1) In contrast to the conclusions made by Price and others[2], it is proved in a general way that to separate the external and internal parts of the Hz-component of the geomagnetic field directly by using only one of the horizontal components observed is impossible.(2) The uniqueness and convergence of all theoretical formulae separating the external and internal parts are also proved, thus ensuring the completeness of the theoretical results.(3) The methods of Price[2] and Weaver[5] relating to the three and two dimen-sional problems should be established independently, while the fundamental formulae presented here are also valid for two dimensional field and would therefore directly lead to the two dimensional case.(4) Finally, an indirect approximate method to separate the external and in-ternal parts of the Hz-component by using one of the horizontal components is presented.
