In this paper a comprehensive classification system and no-menclature of the trace fossils are presented. 5 formae and 11 exempla aredescribed. The ichnofacies and depositional environments for the formationare differentiated and the feature and significance for its diagenesis includ-ing compaction, lithification and degradation of carbonate precipitates arediscussed in detail.

Four distinct storm-genersted or induced depositional types have been recorded in lower Carboniferous shallow marine limestones of Ogmore-by-Sea and Three Cliffs Bay, South wales. Type Adeposits have whole and oriented horn coral lag deposits and graded limestones with large regular Zoophycos. They are interpreted as stormgenerated turbidite deposits in an area below Storm wave base. Type B deposits are characterized by graded limestoes and short wavelength hummocky cross-bedding with Rhizocorallium and Small arcuate Zoophycos, Small planolites-like burrows and were probably formed by storm currents at depths just above Storm wave base. Type C deposits consist of crinoidal lag deposits and long wavelength hummocky cross-eedding with escape burrows and were probably deposited just below fair weather wave base.Type D deposits contain skeletal sandstone lag deposits and large-scale, low-angle cross-beding, generally without bioturbation (apart from borings), indicating a shore-face or beach environment.The depositional types belong to the Courceyan limestone (Zaphrentis Zone) and Arundian limestone (Caninia Zone). It appears that the pattern of trace fossils and bioturbation, as well as sedimentary structure and texture, change characterstically with changing wave effect depth in this area.

Rhizocorallium series: lower part of Huangjiadeng formation D_3h~(1-1) 7. Thalassinoides series: upper part of Yuntaiguang formation D_2y~(2-2) 6. Cruziana series: lower part of Yuntaiguang formation D_2y~(2-1) 5. Planolites series: base part of Yuntaiguang formation D_2y~(2-1) 4. Thalassinoides-Skolithos series: upper part of Hueixinshao formation S_2h~(2-2) 3. Chondrites sp. B series: lower part of Huixinshao formation S_2h~(2-1) 2. Chondrites sp. C series: upper part of Xiushan formation S_2x~(1-2) 1. Arthrophycus-Traucumichis series: upper part of Xiaheba formation S_1x~2 These 9 series are widely distributed in Silurian and Devonian Systems of this rgion. They are capable to serve as the secondary means for stratigraphic division and correlation. As for the reconstruction of palaeogeoggraphy and palaeoclimate, they are of more significant importance. For an example, some geologists have considered that Yuntaiguang formation was of terrigenous origin. But based on the trace fossils Cruziana, Thadassinoides, it is reasonable to consider that it is of neritic origin.
