This paper briefly describes three different phases in the course of setting sediment by the current granulometer, and makes it clear that the main factors, which affect results in analysing distribution of sand particles by old method are density and spread subside. A new operating way with granulometer is investigated. It can be shortly expressed as follows: first, uniformly mix the sample to be analysed in a tube, then, put the tube vertical and let the particles subside in still water. In calculating, we worked out the weight of sand which is larger than a particular size in diameter by relation curve of setting time and accumulated weight. Thus the grading composition curve of the sample was deduced. The principle of this new method is described in this paper, as well. By this new method the influnce causing by density and spread subside is eliminated. It serves a possible way to improve the current sediment analysis.

本文简要地描述了现行粒径计颗分方法中泥沙颗粒沉降的三个不同阶段,指明影响现行粒径计法颗分成果的主要因素是异重沉降和扩散沉降作用.提出用粒径计进行颗分的新操作方法—混匀分析法,即先将沙样混匀在粒径计管中,然后再静置沉降.计算中根据沉降时间与累积沙重关系曲线,用图解法求得大于某粒径的沙重,进而推出沙样级配曲线.本文还阐明了粒径计混匀分析法的原理,它消除了现行粒径计颗分方法中存在的异重沉降和扩散沉降的影响,操作和计算简便,是对现行粒径计颗分方法改革的可行途径.

The critical thickness at which the radial instability starts to happen is obtained under the assumption that the turbulence slows down the flattening and a quasi-equilibrium appears during the final period of the flattening of the dust layer. The critical thickness at which the radial instability starts to happen is obtained under the assumption that the turbulence slows down the flattening and a quasi-equilibrium appears during the final period of the flattening of the dust layer. A definite relation among some scales is given:<|Z|>_c:h_*:λ_T=0.02107:0.1592:1, where<|Z|>_c is the average height of the dust grain when the radial instability starts to happen, h_* is the half thickness of the dust layer such that the self-gravitation of the dust layer at Z=h_* is equal to the Z-component of the gravitation of the protosun, and λ_T is the upper limit of the wavelength for the unstable radial disturbences. The time scale for the formation of the rings is also calculated and turns out to be much shorter than the time scale of the flattening.

A photograph system designed for a special purpose was applied to record of the testing process, circuit TV monitored the conditions of model test and video recording equipment and transducer recorded the experimental data.The model tests show that critical height of the embankment on natural soft clay foundation is 4cm (4 m prototype) . The failure of foundation is occured when the height is greater than 4cm(4m prototype). The embankment height will be raised to 7m with the sand columns treatment.
