    Many Chinese non English majors often feel frustrated in an attempt to remember English words. In addition, even though they are able to remember some words, they often use them incorrectly or inappropriately. This paper is concerned with the question: why do Chinese non English majors have problems with vocabulary learning? It is hypothesized that these learning problems may mainly result from a lack of adequate and effective vocabulary learning strategies on the part of the learners. According to the research that has been done in the field of vocabulary learning and teaching, possible efficient vocabulary learning strategies are roughly divided into seven categories in this paper. To support the general discussion regarding the hypothesis, this paper includes a discussion and an analysis of the results obtained from a questionnaire which was designed to elicit information about the vocabulary learning strategies commonly used by Chinese non English majors. The final results of the present study have proved the hypothesis. At the end of this paper, some pedagogical implications have been put forward.

    很多非英语专业的中国学生常常抱怨记不住英语单词 ,或者记住的单词不一会儿就忘 ,即使记住了 ,却不知道怎样正确地运用它们。本文意在探讨大部分非英语专业的中国学生遇到这些问题的主要原因。本文首先提出假设 :这些问题的存在主要是因为他们缺乏有效的词汇学习策略。根据语言学家们在词汇教学理论方面已作出的研究 ,本文提出了七种正确地学习目的语词汇的策略。本次调查是通过学生回答一份有关词汇学习策略的调查问卷的形式进行的 ,调查的最后结果证实了本文的假设 ,即大部分学生很少知道运用正确的词汇学习策略来学习词汇。针对这一现象 ,本文进行了简要的分析 ,并从教与学的角度提出了建议。

Specifically, it examined whether there were gender differences in EFL vocabulary learning beliefs and strategies. Vocabulary learning beliefs in this study consisted of three types: retention, acquisition and practice while vocabulary strategies included 16 variables of metacognitive, cognitive and social/affective strategies. SAS analysis indicated that: (1) no significant corelation was found between gender and achievement; (2) males much more prefer vocabulary acquisition and practice beliefs than females; (3) t-test showed females use more different strategies than males in general academic vocabulary learning and males apply practical strategies more often than females in specific academic vocabulary learning.

    本文以 10 2名非英语专业硕士生为受试对象 ,运用定量研究的方法 ,调查分析了不同性别的学生在英语词汇观念和策略使用上的差异特点。研究结果表明 :(1)性别因素与英语词汇成绩之间不存在相关性 ;(2 )男生认可习得观念和操练观念的程度明显高于女生 ;(3)在基础英语和专业英语词汇策略的使用分析中 ,t 检验显示不同性别的学生在若干策略变量上存在显著性差异

    This paper is concerned with Englisl vocabulary learning strategies of college students and the relationship between strategies and vocabulary test using written questionnaires and test of 50 words. Consequently proposals are put forward with reference to training of English vocabulary learning strategies.
