This paper deals with the relationship between grammar and lexis and its implication in grammar teaching.Since Henry Sweet made his distinction between grammar and lexis,assigning each its own domain,grammar teaching has focused on structure,to the neglect of system,restricting grammar to the description of structure,brushing lexis aside as irrelevant.This is where the crux of the problem lies.The result is that grammar teaching is put in a situation where it is difficult to integrate theory with practice,and consequently it fails to achieve its anticipated objective,namely,to contribute to the learners mastery of a language.We should never lose sight of the fact that language is both vertical and horizontal,that is,both paradigmatic and syntagmatic.The two aspects of language are mutually defining and should not be set apart.Only when we keep in view both grammar and lexis,the paradigmatic and syntagatic aspect of language,and the grammar rules and their spheres of applicability can we expect to succeed in grammar teaching.
