First,there is a good positive correlation between the degree of mitochondrial heterosis and the heterosis of grain yield(correlation coefficient r=0,73).Second, the mitochondrial activity was closely related to grain yield of maize(r=0,83). Third,there is no significant positive correlation between mitochondrial complementation and grain heterossis in our experiment(r=0,50).Fourth,a significantcorrelation betwen mitochondrial heterosis and complementation is also not observed (r= 0,33).The above data indicate that mitochondial heterosis and complementation seem to be of different physiological phenomena.It is suggested that the mitochondrial heterosis may serve as a quantitative heterosis. But we cannot, at present, ascertain that predictors of mitochondrial heterosis is a reliable tool in breeding hybrid cereals.

Statistical analysis of the broad sense heritability and genetic correlation was made in 1979 with the data obtained from ten quantitative characters, i. e. yield (Y), girth (G), relative yield (Y_r), additive coefficient (AC), plugging index (PI), dry rubber content (d.r.c.), increase of dry weight(ID W), distribution of dry weight (DDW), flow index(FI)and flow-restriction index (FRI). The application, of selection index to Hevea breeding has been discussed. Preliminary results thus obtained are as follows.1. The value of broad sense heritability (h_(BS)~2%) of FRI is -5.78～-1.8f because its analysis is confounded by the uninterpretable influences from both site andobservatoin. However, the preliminary study proved that, based on the means obtained from each plot or clone, the gradation of h_(BS)~2% for ten quantitative characters showed marked consistency. The values of h_(BS)~2% of PI and dor.C, were high, that of G, FI and DDW were medium and that of Yr, AC and IDW were low, but the value of h_(BS)~2% of yield was the lowest. It is obvious that in Hevea breeding, selection based on yield only would be unreliable and little improvement could be expected.2. Except FRI, the values of genetic correlation (r_g) between all other characters studied and yield have been compared respectively. Among which the values of girth, relative yield, distribution of dry weight and flow index are high (r_g≥0.70) and the rest are low(r_g≤0.33).3. On the basis of the genetic advance from selection of yield only, we compared the correlative genetic advance of some selection indexes. It was proved that the advance of selection based on yield only is the lowest. Therefore, in Hevea breeding, it seems appropriate to combine the four characters (girth, distribution of dry weight, flow index and yield )as one selection index.

However,no correlation existed between the latex vessel number of pseudopith and the yield for the first five tapping years of mature trees.
