A method for predicting foilborne performance of hydrofoil craft in calm sea is presented in this paper. Based on the respective experimental results of the fore and the aft foils, the characteristics of the interference of the fore foil on the aft foil, the geometrical conditions and the equilibrium equations of the craft, the foilborne performance parameters of the craft including trim, submergence depth of each foil, resistance, thrust, etc. can be calculated within entire foilborne speed range (including take-off speed) by means of digital computer.One of the key points is to evaluate the effects of the fore foil on the aft foil. For various foil systems, the formulae to calculate the position of mean free water surface and the mean downwash angle at the aft foil are derived using the results from the lifting line theory of hydrofoils, and certain corrections on the operating conditions of the aft foil can be made with these formulae. It is found that good agreement between calculated and experimental results can be achieved.
