An E-W striking, subvertical shear zone in the granodiorite of Lake Edison, Central Sierra Nevada, California, U. S. A. was studied to determine the variation in deformation microstructures with distance from the shear zone center. Field and thin-onsecti relations demonstrate that the shear zone nucleated on a pre-existing quartz-filled fracture. Selective chemical etching was used to reveal dynamically recrystallized grain-boundaries of quartz in the granodiorite, offset aplite dike and deformed fracture-filling....

An E-W striking, subvertical shear zone in the granodiorite of Lake Edison, Central Sierra Nevada, California, U. S. A. was studied to determine the variation in deformation microstructures with distance from the shear zone center. Field and thin-onsecti relations demonstrate that the shear zone nucleated on a pre-existing quartz-filled fracture. Selective chemical etching was used to reveal dynamically recrystallized grain-boundaries of quartz in the granodiorite, offset aplite dike and deformed fracture-filling. The recrystllized grain-size of quartz decreased with increasing shear strain toward the center of the shear zone. This would suggest significant variation in the apparent magnitude of tectonic stress. Important effects of strain on the microstructures are suggested by our observations. This phenomenon is contrary to that usually reported in experimental studies, which found no dependence of recrystallized grain size on strain.

The water source has nothing to do with the water-bearing bed of the observed wells, The pressure on the water-bearing bed increases as the impounding goes down up to the depth of 800m. The force for preparing earthquakes from the lower strata acting on the water chemical composition has been simulated by means of transmission of the increased pressure.The observed value indicates that the chemical composition of under ground water varies when the impounding pressure is transmitted up to upper water-bearing bed to cause stress-strain process. It is obvious that the variation amplitude is related to the well tectonic settings, and its geochemical surroundings, but scarcely to the distance of observed well and the testing water-injection well.

In this paper an analytical model of the lithosphere's response to surface loads on an elastic spherical shell is established. The results show that: (1) The lithosphere's flexure under a load depends not only on its thickness, but also on the load's width. (2) The earth's lithosphere can support several thousand-bars flexure stress. (3) Because of the thin plate effect it is necessary to estimate some results again which have been made by the flexure rigidity D of the earth's lithosphere. (4) Generally, the global negative gravitational anomalies are net taused by the surface loads and, probably, they are caused by the deep mass distribution under the lithosphere or the lithosphere's flexure associated with horizontal tectonic forces.
