The alimentary canal of Lycorma delicatula White consists of the following parts:the pharynx, the oesophagus, an antero-laterally projecting gastric caecum, a very longand slender mid-gut, the pylorus and the hind-gut. No filter chamber has been found. The cardiac valve is composed mainly of stomodaeal epithelial cells, and it is socomplicately constructed that under its control the food may either pass from the oeso-phagus into the mid-gut or into the gastric caecum. The principal function of the caecumis to store food temporarily, very little secretory activity has been observed among thecaecal epithelial cells. In this respect, the alimentary canal of Fulgoridae is more close-ly allied to the true bugs of the suborder Heteroptera than to other families of the sub-order Homoptera which possess filter chambers. Four Malpighian tubules opened just at the junction of the mid-gut and the pylorus;no cryptonephridium has been observed. From its stain properties the epithelium of thepylorus, though without a distinct intima, may be considered as a part of the hind-gut.The pyloric valve is entirely composed of proctodaeal epithelial cells; inside the valve thereis a massive aggregate of giant cells of unknown function. Histochemical tests re-vealed that they contain higher amounts of nucleic acids besides glycogen and free lipids,and is thus thought that it may play certain role in the nutritive metabolism of the insect. The salivary glands are highly developed and consist of a pair of enormous majorprincipal glands, a pair of minor principal glands, each of which is subdivided into fourlobes, and a pair of accessory glands. Histological and histochemical studies revealedthat the major principal gland and three of the four minor principal gland lobes arezymogenic in nature, and contain acid mucopolysaccharide. The other lobe of the minorprincipal gland is a mucous gland and contains acid mucopolysaccharide, mucoprotein andlipoprotein. The accessory gland is also a mucous gland, besides the three substancesmentioned above, it also contains another PAS-positive substance of unknown nature.The nucleic of all three pairs of salivary glands are always multi-branched and containlarge amounts of DNA. Cytoplasmic RNA is very abundunt in the mucous cells butvery scanty in the zymogen cells. Intracellular canaliculi have been found in gland cellsof both the major and the minor principal glands, but not in those of the accessory gland.

The following results were ob-tained: 1. No significant differences in the numbers of leucocytes of the peripheral and thecentral blood were found in animals before irradiation and in the non-irradiated ones....

Significant increase in the number of leucocytes in the peripheral blood (being51--82% greater) was observed in all groups 7 hours after irradiation, whereas thatof the central blood decreased or maintained at the pre-irradiation levels with the ex-ception of the 1000r group which showed increase but was still 48% lesser as comparedwith its corresponding peripheral blood. Hence, significant difference in the leucocytelevels of the peripheral and central blood were found 7 hours after irradiation in all ir-radiated groups. 3. The leucocyte levels of the peripheral and the central blood 24 hours after ir-radiation, in the lower dose groups (100r, 300r and 500r) falled below the pre-irradiationlevels and approached one another very closely, whereas in the higher dose groups (800rand 1000r) only the central one decreased and the peripheral blood was still in a stateof leucocytosis. Hence, in the higher dose group, significant difference in the leucocytelevels of the two kinds of blood 24 hours after irradiation still persisted as in the caseof that 7 hours after irradiation. 4. The difference in the number of leukocytes in the peripheral and the centralblood during the period of the initial leucocytosis is probably brought about by themigration of a great number of leucocytes from the large blood vessels into the small ones(such as arterioles, venules and capillaries) and through the walls of capillaries leucocy-tes moved towards the injuried tissues. Leucocytosis does not occur in the whole bloodcirculation and in most case, it only appears in the peripheral blood. The decrease inthe number of leucocytes in the central blood concomitantly with the leucocytosis of theperipheral one suggests the possibility that the redistribution of leucocytes in blood ves-sels of different diameters rather than the accelerative discharges of the heterophils fromthe marrow plays an important role in the initiation of leucocytosis.

The mesen-teron is divided into three portions: a thick-walled saccular anterior portion, a slender middle portion which is the longest and with its epithelium projected into the lumen as four large longitudinal folds, and a short globular posterior portion without such folds. Merocrine type of secretion is found among the epithelial cells of all the three portions of the mesenteron. There are numerous regenerating cells situated in the nidi. The rectum may be divided into a slender anterior portion and a more swollen posterior portion with a large lateral dilatation. The plate-like rectal pad is highly developed.Tie salivary system of Belostomatidae is highly differentiated, consisting of a pair of major principal glands, a pair of minor principal glands and a pair of accessory glands. In this respect, it differs from the salivary system of the Heteroptera-Gymnocerata, and quite resembles that of the suborder Homoptera. Both the major and minor principal glands are grape-like and are composed of numerous glandular acini. The paired globular parts at the anterior end of each major principal gland are milky in appearance, both lipoprotein and neutral polysaccharide or mucoprotein having been detected in its secretion. Only neutral polysaccharide or mucoprotein has been recorded in the semi-transparent acini of the main portion of the major principal gland and the whole minor principal gland. No acid polysaccharide, a component so widely distributed in the salivary secretions of phytophagous hemipteran insects tested, has been found in this insect. The accessory gland is tubular; the cells of its anterior transparent portion and posterior semi-transparent portion differ in staining properties. The watery secretion of the accessory gland cannot be preserved in microscopic preparations; its chemical composition, therefore, remains unknown.
