Proceeding from a textual analysis the paper centres around the characters' attempts in search for identity and their abnormally alienated love. These two phenomena, in a sense, represent the bifurcation of two declining trends of their mental development, both undergoing tremendous suffering and desperate floundering. It is the view of the paper that such abnormal and alienated psychology, if examined in light of the particular characters in their particular environment, should by no means be regarded as something unjustifiable. Therefore, in spite of its being partially an imitation of the Western modernistic literature, it can nevertheless reflect the social reality to some extent.Conclusion: the efforts to depict the twisted mentality of modern Man under complicated contradictions and conflicts, and further to discover the real value of life, should be acknowledged as a duty entrusted to present-day literature.
