The medial head of the gastrocnemius has a wider and thicker belly, a bigger diameter and longer pedicle of the blood vessel than the lateral head.Theblood for the skin in the area of the medial head is mainly supplied by the musclocutaneous artery, while that in the area of lateral head by the direct cutaneous artery.

Botulinum toxin(B.T.)type A was injected into the triceps surae group ofmuscles in the cat,causing chronic n-m block in these muscles.About three weeks-after the injection electrophysiological responses of the motoneurones of the medialgastrocnemius(m.g),lateral gastrocnemius(1.g.) and soleus(sol.)muscles,eitherto othodromic stimulation of the dorsal roots,or to antidromic stimulation of theirrespective muscle nerves,or to a constant current passing,through the soma mem-brane,were examined with the aid of intracellular microelectrodes.The main resultsobtained were:In comparison either with the typical responses in the the normalcat or with the responses of the contralateral unpoisoned side of the spinal cord ofthe same experimental animal,the responses of the motoneurones of the poisonedside showed in most cases a striking shortening of the after hyperpolarization(AHP),a decrease in the duration of the action potential and a decrease in the prominenceof the IS-SD spike inflection,and in general started to give repetitive dischargeswith the passage of weaker constant current.With two antidromic stimuli,thesecond SD response appeared at shorter stimulus intervals on the poisoned side.B.T.did not affect the conduction velocity of the motor axons and the resting po-tential of the motoneurone soma,and in general left the size of the action potentialovershoot unchanged.On all these three points the effect of B.T.forms a strikingcontrast to that of axotomy.In relation to AHP,B.T.distinguishes itself by ha-ving a shortening effect on the motoneurones of all the three muscles-m.g.,l.g.and sol.,while axotomy and TTX block of nerve conduction only affect the AHPof the sol.motoneurone.The various possible mechanisms underlying,the B.T.effect are discussed.

Twenty lateral gastrocnemius muscle from both sides of ten human bodies have been dissected carefully. According to the Principle of the primary branch distribution, the muscle fibers architecture, and their different orig- ins and insertions, the lateral gastrocnemius muscle is able to be divided into three discrete subvolumes or compartments: the medial compartment (mus- cular compartment), the lateral superfcial compartment, and the lateral deep compartment. The medial compartment, which is composed of unipennate bundles, is the most upper and medial portion of the lateral gastrocnemius muscle. The lateral superficial compartment, being pennate in form, is the largest of the three and occupies the lateral and superficial portion or the muscle. The lateral deep compartment is fanshaped, and is situated beneath the lateral snperficial one. Two pattern of nerve branchings have been found. In the first pattern there are four primary nerve branches, and in the se- cond there are five. The former is more frequent (70). No difference has been found among ages of between sexes and sides. The authors consider that the method for studying compartmentalization in human autoptic materials seems to be improved and the compartmentalization of the lateral gastrocn- emius muscle in human body is needed to be investigated further, However it is valuable to divide into compartments in certain muscles in order to investigate the distribution of different fiber types,

本研究详细解剖了二十侧人体的腓肠肌外侧头。基于肌神经一级分支的分布、肌纤维排列和起止点的互异将腓肠肌外侧头分为三个肌亚部(亚体),即内侧亚部(肌性部)、外侧浅亚部和外侧深亚部。内侧亚部为半羽状肌位于腓肠肌外侧头内上方。外侧浅亚部为羽状肌,体积最大,居该肌的外侧浅部,外侧深亚部呈扇形,位于外侧浅亚部的深面。腓肠肌外侧头的神经在肌质内的分支有二型:1型分为四支,2型分为五支。二十侧解剖中以1型较多见(占70%)。无性别、年龄和侧别差异。我们认为腓肠肌外侧头分三个肌亚体的研究有待进一步证实。就人肌尸检材料作亚部化的研究在方法学上有待进一步探讨。并认为在腓肠肌外侧头中按亚部化原则取材以研究各亚部内肌纤维型的构成比可能更具有参考价值。
