In this paper,we have been able to divide the lateral gastrocnemius muscle into three compartments,according to the princi ple of“compartmentalization”and the rule of primary branch innervation, and have tried to find if there is and differences of fiber proportion and distribution among the compartments.Staining myosin ATPase at pH9.4 is performed according to Padykula & Herman,modified by Guth & Samaha,for histochemical identification of fast and slow twitch fibers, and ATPase reaction after acid preincubation in pH4.3 is also used for the sake of contrast.The result shows that there is no difference in proportion of fiber types between the lateral superficial and lateral deep compartments.The fast twitch fibers in male comprise about 43.67% of all the fibers counted,and 33.68% in female.A special case is found in a boy of 6-year old,whose medial compartment appears to have a re- markably high proportion of fast twitch fibers,up to a level of 63.25%,it is therefore considered to be determined congenitally.The authors suggest that the medial compartment should probably be the most variable por tion of the lateral gastrocnemius,thus needing further investigation.

The result showed that the lateral gastrocnemius muscles were divided into three discrete compartments. Each compartment contained a primary nerve branch supply and a distinct innervation band of end plates. The medial gastrocnemius and soleus are not compartmentalized. We suggest that there is a general correlation between the distribution of motor end plates and the compartmentalization of skeletal muscles. The compartmentalization of skeletal muscles with gross anatomy can be demonstrated by the distri bution of its motor end plates.
