The caudal parts of the digestiveand urogenital systems are absent. Their lumbosacral cords have been studiedin serial sections in comparison with a normal series with the followingresults: The general features of the cross sections of the sympodic cords are erratic:The sections are smaller, compressed mediolaterally or ventrodorsally and theirtwo sides are not symmetrical. The central canal is shifted ventrally. The graymatter of the anterior horn spreads anteriorly while the white matter in thisregion becomes thinned off, but compensatively thickened in the adjacent parts. The constellation of the motor cell groups is anomalous: Apart from themedial group in the anterior horn, the lateral group is shifted ventrolaterally.The cell columns are smaller in cross section, poorly defined and scattered nearthe anterior white matter. They become abruptly attenuated from the middlepart of the series downward and soon leave the anterior horn a total blank. The number of motor cells in the anterior horn is decreased: The cellmagnitude of the lateral column in sympodic fetus 1 is estimated at 72.1% ofthe normal. In sympodic fetus 2 it falls to 27.5%. The percentage values of themedial cell columns in sympodic fetuses 1 and 2 dwindle to 55.4% and 28.7%respectively. Taking together the two columns, the percentages of the motorcells in sympodic fetuses 1 and 2 are reduced to 71.0 and 27.6 respectively. The reduction and anomaly of the muscles are concentrated in the caudalsegments of the sympodic body,--the pelvis and perineum in particular. Themotor cells in the anterior horn of the lumbosacral cord show a commensuratedecrement, especially at the caudalmost levels. The degree of development ofthe myotomes is correlated with the magnitude of their central motor cells.

Citrus in South China is affected with a highly destructive disease known as"Yellow shoot".The disease is most serious in the Chaoshan and the Yuehchungdistricts of Kwangtung Province and in the Changchow district of Fukien Province.It has been known in the Chaoshan district for over 70 years but has becomeepiphytotic only since about 30 years ago.During this period,millions of Citrustrees have been killed. Citrus trees may be affected in any age.The characteristic symptoms of thedisease are general yellowing of some of the nearly mature new shoots put out insummer,autumn,or early winter,dropping of the yellow leaves,and rotting ofrootlets.In addition to these general symptoms in the early stage,fasciculationof branches and malformation of leaves (abnormally large or deformed in variousways) often occur on Ponkan and Chiaokan (C.reticulata) and are particularlycommon on sweet orange.On affected sweet orange trees may also be seenshortening of internodes,resulting in bunchy growth of branches,and downwardas well as upright growth of shoots.In a later stage,the affected tree puts outnew shoots as usual but such shoots generally become chlorotic showing zinc ormanganese deficiency symptoms.The midrib and lateral veins as well as theadjoining tissues of part of the older leaves turn yellow.The midrib and largerveins may also become enlarged and corky and often split on dorsal side,showingnitrogen and boron deficiency symptoms.Affected trees blossom earlier and moreheavily than usual but bear few fruits.On badly affected trees fruits matureearlier but do not color well and are often deformed.Defoliation and root rottingbecome progressively serious as the disease advances.Young trees below 7 yearsof age generally are killed in 1 to 2 years or sooner.Nursery trees are killedeven more quickly.Older trees decline less rapidly but generally become unpro-ductive in about 2 years after the first symptoms appear. Nearly all the species and varieties of Citrus grown in the affected area aresusceptible.The order of degree of susceptibility is as follows: Ponkan,Chiaokan,Chachihkan,Lukan,Tungkan (all (C.reticulata),various varieties of sweet orange(C.sinensis),Hungninmeng (hybrid of C.lemon and C.rcticulata) Nienchu (C.rcticulata),Shangmayu (C.graudis) and Shihchichu (C.mitis). Studies of the cause of the disease will be reported in a later paper.

We describe in this paper an experiment using a cloud chamber in a magnetic field of 6200 gauss to determine the average total cross-section of the direct production of electron pairs in aluminium by high energy electrons generated in cascade showers and having energies larger than 30 Mev. We have found after correcting for the spurious events 8.1 electron tridents, which were produced actually by electrons. This figure corresponds to a mean free path of 672±585 cm. or an average total cross-section of (0.25±...

We describe in this paper an experiment using a cloud chamber in a magnetic field of 6200 gauss to determine the average total cross-section of the direct production of electron pairs in aluminium by high energy electrons generated in cascade showers and having energies larger than 30 Mev. We have found after correcting for the spurious events 8.1 electron tridents, which were produced actually by electrons. This figure corresponds to a mean free path of 672±585 cm. or an average total cross-section of (0.25± 0.22) X 10-25 cm2, for trident production. In the treatment of data, the elimination of spurious tridents has been appropriately considered. The formulas of the total cross-section derived by Bhabha[8] and by Murota et al[11] have been applied in accordance with our experimental conditions to compute the total cross-section. Finally, comparison between the theoretical and experimental values has been made. Our experiment is in fair agreement with the theory of Murota et al. While not in contradiction with that of Bhabha.

本文叙述利用场强为6200高斯的磁云室,对级联射中的能量大于30兆电子伏的电子在铝中直接产生电子对的平均总截面进行了测量。实验上总共找到真正由电子产生的电子三岔8.1个,相应于三岔产生的平均自由路程为672±585厘米或平均总截面为(0.25±0.22)×10~(-25)厘米~2。在数据处理中,对假三岔数目的除去作了应有的适当考虑。此外对Bhabha及Murota等的总截面公式也作了适合于于我们实验具体情况的修正,并算出总截面值,最后将它同实验值作了比较。结果我们认为实验上测得的值和Murota等的总截面值较为接近,但也不与Bhabha的截面值矛盾。
