3,3,4-Trimethyl 4 penten 2 one has been synthesized by the acylation of 2,3 dimethyl 2 butene with acetic anhydride in the presence of zinc chloride supported on various solids. K10 clay was the best support, but HY zeolite, Synclyst S13(an amorphous acidic solid), silica gel and alumina were all reasonable supports. Both the loading of ZnCl 2 and the modification method affected the catalytic activity of the catalysts.

The tests on quality indexes of sealing dopes, including appearance, affinity, reserving stability, heat-resistant,alkalinity-resistant, acidity-resistant, TS%, drying period,watertightness,airtightness,were conducted. The samples with airtightness below 3% accounted for 43%, and those with watertightness below 3% is only 29% of total samples, which showed the quality in dope seality need to be improved.
