A biocatalytic route for the synthesis of a water soluble and conducting complex of polyaniline (PANI)/sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS) was presented. The SDS micellar-templated polymerization of aniline is strongly pH-dependent in this case. A wider range at low pH (1.0~4.0) was required to produce the conducting PANI, optimal pH was 3.0 and the tran- sition from emeraldine salt to emeraldine base form of PANI occurred at about pH 10.4 in this anionic micellar system. Elemental analysis, UV-Vis, FT-IR, cyclic voltammetry, viscosity, conductivity and TGA studies on the characters of PANI/SDS complex indicate the presence of a thermally stable and reversible electrochemical active form of PANI.
