Rapid heating may improve the weak plasticity which is shown by the bituminous coals with high volatile matter content.The effect of heating rate on the change of plasticity has been examined with several kinds of coal of this category from the North-East of China.Elementary analysis,extraction of thermal bitumen,and determination of plasticity were made on the treated coal.The structural changes of coal as a result of the rapid heating treat- ment,which were found to be different from those obtained by heating at an ordinary rate(3℃/min),are offered to be responsible to the increase of plasticity. When high heating rate(10,000℃/min)was applied using solid heat car- rier,it was found that the plasticity decreased to a minimum in a certain temperature range and increased to a value much higher than that of the un- treated coal in another.This suggests that the thermal decomposition of coal at different temperatures may not be of the same kind. It was found that the coking property of a gas coal with moderate plas- ticity can be increased markedly by rapid preheating.

For taking full advantage of the strength of structural materials in design, it is necessary to study the mechanical characteristics of metallic structural materials under rapid loading and heating. This paper describes a short-time high-temperature tensile testing machine, which is capable of constant-rate loading up to 85 kg/sec and heating at a rate up to 80℃/sec, the temperature gradient within the gage length for a distance of 50 mm being less than 5℃. All the heating, temperature-controlling and stress-strain measuring processes are done automatically. Experiments such as rapid tension under high temperature, rapid heating under constant loading and short-time creep can be carried out on this tester. Specimens of low carbon steel, R1T and 12F2A have been tested on it. Diagrams and tables have been included here and results from these tests have been preliminarily discussed.
