This paper deals with hob grinding for involute gears.Strictly speaking,theworm surface of the hob must be an involute helicoid which possesses an intersectingcurve in axial plane convex.But this helicoid cannot be generated on a contemperanyrelieving lathe,therefore,in engineering,it is often superseded by a helicoid withstraight line generater in axial plane.In the backing-off process,the edge of thecutter has a radial motion,and simultaneously the blank and the relieving tool havea relative helical motion,resulting in a helicoid.While in grinding,the hob profileis an enveloped surface of a grinding wheel.This is the fundamental difference be-tween the two processes.The effort for obtaining a perfect helicoid in grinding has been proved fruitess.It is because,in this case,the conjugate surface of the hob relief is a column facewhich can not be superseded by a surface of revolution.As a result,only approximateones can be expected. It is no doubt that the main reason responsible for deviation in grinding is theconfiguration and the position of contact lines between hob and wheel.It is foundout that the optimum condition is for the lines of contact to exist near a straightgenerator of the hob relief in a horizontal axial plane which coincides with the edgeof the relieving tool.We are thus confronted with the problem of how to find outthe spatial position of a grinding wheel to agree with the required optimum condition.Imagine a hyperboloid of one sheet intersects with the helicoid of hob relief with onesuperimposed curve being the common straight generator of the two surfaces.Generalyspeaking,there must be another common curve in them and interference must existbetween the two superimposed curves.If we change the relative spatial position of theaxis of the hyperboloid and adjust its parameters,the interference can be decreased tominimum.When the interference area is lessened sufficiently,the two surfaces can beconceived as having approximate tangent contact along the horizontal straight genera-tor and thus the optimum position of wheel axis can be ascertained.The paper goes on to deal with another important problem concerned with fini-shing accuracy,i.e.the boundary between enveloped area and forming area of thefinished hob.In grinding,the radial motion of the grinding wheel is often limited,inthat,when it reaches a certain position,interference will occur between wheel peri-phery and the next tooth edge.This position is the final position of the grindingwheel.The remaining area in hob relief is the forming area which retains the configu-ration of the grinding wheel,in which case no accuracy can be expected.

The concept of Boolean integration is introduced in this paper. The integration method that finds out the original function of a Boolean differential function, and some fundamental theorems are also presented.
